When was the first barcode scanned?

On the morning of 26 June 1974 a cashier at a Marsh supermarket in Troy, Ohio, scanned a ten pack of Wrigley Juicy Fruit chewing gum, the first retail sale using a barcode. The code used was the Universal Product Code, or UPC, which had been agreed on by the grocery industry to speed up checkout and track inventory. That first scanned pack of gum is now kept in a museum. Barcodes went on to transform retail, logistics, and manufacturing by allowing fast, accurate reading of product information. Today barcodes and their descendants are scanned billions of times a day worldwide.
