The Full Story
Carothers, a chemist leading DuPont's research into polymers, created nylon 6,6 in February 1935. It was strong, elastic and resistant to wear. DuPont's first nylon product was a toothbrush with nylon bristles in 1938. Nylon stockings went on sale nationwide in the US on 15 May 1940, and millions of pairs sold almost immediately. During World War II, nylon was diverted to make parachutes, ropes and tyres, causing shortages of stockings.
