On 24 July 1911 Hiram Bingham III of Yale University was led to Machu Picchu by a local farmer in the Peruvian Andes. While local people knew of the site, Bingham's expeditions introduced it to the wider world. The 15th-century Inca citadel sits at about 2,430 metres above sea level and was likely a royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.
