When was Julius Caesar assassinated?

By early 44 BC, Julius Caesar had been named dictator for life, alarming senators who feared the end of the Roman Republic. On 15 March, a group of senators led by Marcus Brutus and Gaius Cassius stabbed him during a Senate meeting held in a hall next to the Theatre of Pompey. The historian Suetonius reported that he was stabbed 23 times. Rather than saving the Republic, the murder triggered years of civil war. Caesar’s adopted heir Octavian eventually won and became Augustus, the first Roman emperor, in 27 BC.
