When was Greenpeace founded?

In September 1971, a small group sailed an old fishing boat, renamed the Greenpeace, towards Amchitka Island to protest an underground nuclear test. They were intercepted before reaching the site, but the voyage drew wide public attention, and the US ended testing at Amchitka the following year. The group adopted the name Greenpeace, and the organisation grew to campaign on whaling, deforestation, climate change and ocean pollution. In 1985 French intelligence agents bombed its ship Rainbow Warrior in Auckland harbour, killing photographer Fernando Pereira. Today Greenpeace operates in more than 55 countries.
