Page and Brin began working together at Stanford University in 1996 on a search engine called BackRub, which ranked pages by the links pointing to them. They renamed it Google, a play on googol, the number 1 followed by 100 zeros, reflecting the vast amount of information online. The google.com domain was registered in September 1997, and the company was incorporated the following year after an investment of 100,000 dollars from Sun Microsystems co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim. Its first office was a garage belonging to Susan Wojcicki, who later became chief executive of YouTube. Google became part of the parent company Alphabet in 2015.
