Quick Answer

Francium was first identified in 1939.

The Full Story

Francium was first identified in 1939 by Marguerite Perey at the Curie Institute in Paris. She discovered it while studying the decay products of actinium, and it became the last naturally occurring element to be discovered. Francium is extremely radioactive and exists only in tiny traces in nature. Because it decays so quickly, only a handful of atoms may exist naturally at any one time.
