Zuckerberg founded the site with fellow students Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. The company dropped The from its name in 2005 and opened to anyone aged 13 or over with an email address in September 2006. Facebook passed 1 billion monthly active users in October 2012 and bought Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014. In October 2021 the parent company was renamed Meta Platforms, while the Facebook app now has around 3 billion monthly users.
