Bromine was discovered in 1826 by Antoine Jérôme Balard, and independently by Carl Jacob Löwig around the same time. Balard found the element in brine and sea-salt residues collected from the Mediterranean region. The name bromine comes from the Greek bromos, meaning “stench,” because of its strong odor. Bromine is one of the few elements that is liquid at room temperature.
