When was Abraham Lincoln assassinated?

Lincoln was watching the comedy Our American Cousin with his wife Mary when actor and Confederate sympathiser John Wilkes Booth shot him in the back of the head. The attack came just five days after General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, effectively ending the Civil War. Booth leapt to the stage, broke his leg and escaped, but he was tracked down and killed in a Virginia barn on 26 April. Lincoln was carried to a boarding house across the street, the Petersen House, where he died at 7:22 a.m. He was the first US president to be assassinated, and his funeral train travelled about 1,600 miles back to Springfield, Illinois.
