The Full Story

On the night of 14 April 1912, during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City, the Titanic struck an iceberg at 11:40 PM ship time. The impact buckled the hull plates along the starboard side, opening the first five compartments to the sea. The ship could stay afloat with four flooded compartments but not five. Over the next 2 hours and 40 minutes, the bow sank deeper, the stern rose out of the water, and the ship broke apart and sank at approximately 2:20 AM on 15 April. Of the roughly 2,224 people aboard, more than 1,500 died, making it one of the deadliest maritime disasters in history.
