When did the James Webb Space Telescope launch?

The James Webb Space Telescope, a partnership between NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency, launched on an Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou in French Guiana on Christmas Day 2021. It then travelled about 1.5 million km to a stable point beyond the Moon called L2, arriving in January 2022. Its 6.5-metre mirror is made of 18 gold-coated hexagonal segments, and a sunshield about the size of a tennis court keeps it extremely cold. The first full-colour images were released on 12 July 2022. The telescope, which cost around $10 billion, observes in infrared to see the earliest galaxies.
