The Full Story
Hernán Cortés landed on the Mexican coast in 1519 with a few hundred Spanish soldiers. He gained tens of thousands of Indigenous allies, particularly the Tlaxcalans, who were enemies of the Aztecs. A smallpox epidemic in 1520 devastated Tenochtitlan's population and killed Emperor Cuitláhuac. After a siege of about 75 days, the last emperor, Cuauhtémoc, was captured on 13 August 1521.
