When did the 9/11 attacks happen?

On the morning of 11 September 2001, hijackers took control of four commercial flights departing from Boston, Newark and Washington Dulles. American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46 am, and United Airlines Flight 175 hit the South Tower at 9:03 am. American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon at 9:37 am, while United Airlines Flight 93 came down in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers fought back. Both Twin Towers collapsed within two hours, and 2,977 victims were killed in total. The attacks led to the US-led war in Afghanistan, the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and sweeping changes to airport security worldwide.
