After decades of struggle led by figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, the British Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act in July 1947. At midnight on 14 to 15 August 1947, India became an independent dominion, and Nehru delivered his famous Tryst with Destiny speech. Independence came with the Partition of British India into India and Pakistan, which displaced around 15 million people and caused an estimated several hundred thousand to 2 million deaths. The Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950, making the country a republic, a date now celebrated as Republic Day. India is now the worldβs most populous country and its largest democracy.
