When did Cleopatra die?

Cleopatra VII was the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic dynasty, a Greek-speaking family that had governed Egypt since the death of Alexander the Great. She allied with Julius Caesar and later with the Roman general Mark Antony. After their fleet was defeated by Octavian at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, Antony took his own life, and Cleopatra died soon after, in August 30 BC. Ancient writers said she was killed by the bite of an asp, a venomous snake, though historians debate how she died. Egypt then became a province of the Roman Empire.
