When did Alexander the Great die?

Alexander III of Macedon became king at 20 and, in around 12 years of campaigning, built an empire stretching from Greece and Egypt to what is now Pakistan. He fell ill after a banquet in Babylon and died in June 323 BC, just short of his 33rd birthday. The cause is still debated, with theories including malaria, typhoid, poisoning and complications of heavy drinking. With no clear adult heir, his generals fought over the empire and divided it into rival kingdoms, including Ptolemaic Egypt. The location of his tomb, once a famous landmark in Alexandria, has been lost.
