What was Pangaea?

Pangaea began forming around 335 million years ago as older landmasses collided. It was surrounded by a single vast ocean called Panthalassa. The supercontinent began breaking apart around 200 million years ago, during the early Jurassic, first into Laurasia in the north and Gondwana in the south. German scientist Alfred Wegener proposed in 1912 that continents had once been joined, pointing to matching coastlines, fossils and rocks. His idea of continental drift was widely rejected until plate tectonics explained it in the 1960s.
