What is volcanic ash?
GeologyVolcanology
Quick Answer
Volcanic ash is made of tiny fragments of rock, glass, and minerals blasted out during an eruption. Despite its name, it is not the same as the ash from a fire.
The Full Story
Volcanic ash particles are usually less than 2 millimeters across and can travel very far in the atmosphere. Ash clouds are dangerous to aircraft, can damage engines, and can blanket wide regions with abrasive material. When deposited on land, ash can later form tuff as it compacts and hardens. Major eruptions such as Mount Pinatubo in 1991 sent ash high into the stratosphere.
