What is veganism?

FoodLifestyle

Quick Answer

Veganism is a way of living that avoids animal products, including meat, fish, dairy, eggs and honey, and often leather and wool too.

The Full Story

The word vegan was coined in November 1944 by British woodworker Donald Watson, who founded the Vegan Society with a small group of non-dairy vegetarians. Unlike vegetarians, vegans avoid all foods made from animals as well as products tested on or made from them. A well-planned vegan diet can meet nutritional needs, but vegans need a reliable source of vitamin B12, usually from supplements or fortified foods. Studies such as a 2018 analysis in the journal Science found plant-based diets generally have a far smaller environmental footprint than diets heavy in meat and dairy. World Vegan Day is celebrated on 1 November, and the Veganuary pledge, launched in 2014, has signed up millions of people.
