📖 what
What is the gravitational force?
PhysicsFundamental forces
Quick Answer
Gravity is the attractive force between masses. It gives objects weight, keeps planets in orbit, and shapes galaxies and the large-scale structure of the universe.
The Full Story
Gravitational force is the attraction that exists between anything with mass or energy. Isaac Newton described it mathematically in 1687, and Albert Einstein later showed in 1915 that gravity can be understood as the curvature of spacetime. On Earth it gives objects an acceleration of about 9.8 m/s² when they fall freely near sea level. Gravity is the weakest of the four fundamental forces, but because it has infinite range and mass is always attractive, it dominates astronomy and cosmology.
