The Full Story
Sound is produced when something vibrates, sending waves of compressed and rarefied particles through a surrounding medium such as air, water, or solids. These pressure waves reach our ears, where they are converted into signals the brain interprets as sound. Because sound needs a medium to travel through, it cannot cross the vacuum of space. In air at room temperature it moves at about 343 metres per second, but it travels much faster through water and faster still through solids.
