What is origami?

The word origami comes from the Japanese 'oru', to fold, and 'kami', paper. Paper folding became popular in Japan after paper became more affordable, and the first known book of instructions, 'Senbazuru Orikata', was published in 1797. The paper crane is the best-known model and a symbol of peace and hope. Folding techniques inspired by origami are now used in engineering, from compact solar panels on satellites to folding car airbags and medical stents. The Japanese master Akira Yoshizawa helped create a standard system of diagrams used by folders worldwide.
