What is ikigai?

The word combines 'iki', meaning life, and 'gai', meaning value or worth. In Japan, ikigai often refers to everyday sources of joy and purpose, such as family, a hobby or a daily routine, rather than a grand life mission. Outside Japan it is often shown as a Venn diagram of what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs and what you can be paid for, though that diagram is a Western adaptation. The idea became widely known partly through studies of long-lived people in Okinawa. Research in Japan has linked having a strong sense of ikigai with better health and longer life.
