What is BMI?

Quick Answer

Body mass index (BMI) is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared, used as a rough health screen.

The Full Story

The formula was devised in the 1830s by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet and named body mass index in 1972 by physiologist Ancel Keys. For adults, the WHO classifies a BMI below 18.5 as underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 as healthy, 25 to 29.9 as overweight and 30 or above as obese. It is cheap and quick, but it does not distinguish muscle from fat or show where fat is stored, so muscular athletes can be misclassified. Waist measurement is often used alongside BMI. For children, BMI is interpreted using age- and sex-specific charts.
