The Full Story
When a star like the Sun runs out of fuel, it throws off its outer layers as a glowing planetary nebula, leaving behind its core. This white dwarf is roughly the size of Earth but contains around half to a full solar mass, so a teaspoon of its material would weigh tonnes on Earth. It no longer produces energy by fusion and slowly cools over billions of years. The nearest known white dwarf is Sirius B, the faint companion of the brightest star in the night sky. About 97 percent of stars in the Milky Way are expected to end as white dwarfs.
