A tsunami is a train of powerful ocean waves triggered when a large volume of water is suddenly displaced — most often by an undersea earthquake, but also by landslides or volcanic eruptions. In deep water the waves can race across the ocean at speeds near 800 kilometres per hour while barely rising above the surface. As they reach shallow coastal water they slow and pile up into towering, destructive walls of water. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history.
