The word is short for “picture element”. On a screen, each pixel usually contains red, green and blue subpixels that combine at different brightness levels to create millions of colours. Resolution describes how many pixels an image or display has: a 4K television has 3,840 by 2,160 pixels, over 8 million in total. Pixel density, measured in pixels per inch, determines sharpness; many smartphones exceed 400 ppi. The first digital photograph, made in 1957 by Russell Kirsch, was just 176 by 176 pixels and showed his baby son.
