What is a microburst?

WeatherSevere storms

Quick Answer

A microburst is a sudden, powerful column of sinking air from a thunderstorm that spreads outward when it hits the ground. It can produce damaging winds over a small area, especially near airports.

The Full Story

Microbursts are a type of downburst, typically affecting an area less than about 4 kilometres across and lasting only a few minutes. Rain-cooled air falling rapidly from a thunderstorm can hit the surface and rush outward in all directions, creating wind gusts as strong as or stronger than some tornado winds. They are especially dangerous for aircraft during takeoff and landing because the wind direction and speed can change very quickly. Microbursts have caused serious aviation accidents and are closely monitored by Doppler radar and airport wind sensors.

Key Facts
