Quick Answer
Adults need at least 7 hours of sleep a night, teenagers 8 to 10 hours and school-age children 9 to 12 hours.
The Full Story
Sleep experts at the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommend that adults get 7 or more hours of sleep per night on a regular basis. Teenagers aged 13 to 18 need 8 to 10 hours, children aged 6 to 12 need 9 to 12 hours, and newborns can sleep 14 to 17 hours a day. Sleep happens in cycles of about 90 minutes, moving through light, deep and REM stages four to six times a night. According to the CDC, about one in three US adults regularly gets too little sleep. Chronic sleep loss is linked to weaker immunity, weight gain, heart disease, poorer memory and a higher risk of accidents.
