How long do cats live?

A healthy domestic cat commonly reaches its mid-teens, and many live past 20 with good care. Indoor cats tend to live longer because they face fewer risks from traffic, predators, fights and diseases. Diet, weight, neutering, vaccinations and regular vet check-ups all affect lifespan. Some pedigree breeds are prone to particular health problems, while mixed-breed cats often benefit from greater genetic diversity. A common rule of thumb says a 1-year-old cat is roughly like a 15-year-old human, and a 2-year-old like a 24-year-old, with about four cat years per human year after that.
