Most paper begins as wood, which is chipped and broken down into cellulose fibres either mechanically by grinding or chemically by cooking with chemicals. The resulting pulp may be bleached and mixed with water, fillers and dyes. In a paper machine, the pulp mixture is sprayed onto a fast-moving mesh screen, where water drains and the fibres mat together. The wet sheet is pressed between rollers and passed over heated cylinders to dry, then rolled or cut. Papermaking is credited to Cai Lun, a Chinese court official, around 105 CE.
