How does telomere length change as we age?
Human BiologyGenetics
Quick Answer
Telomeres usually get shorter each time a cell divides, because DNA copying cannot fully replicate the ends of chromosomes. Over time, this shortening is associated with aging and cell limits.
The Full Story
Telomeres are repetitive DNA sequences at the ends of chromosomes that act like protective caps. Each time a cell divides, a small amount of telomere DNA is lost because the ends cannot be copied completely. When telomeres become too short, cells may stop dividing or enter senescence. Enzymes called telomerase can rebuild telomeres in some cells, including many germ cells and some stem cells, but not most ordinary body cells.
