How does a vacuum cleaner work?

technologyhome

Quick Answer

A motor-driven fan creates low air pressure inside the vacuum, so higher-pressure air outside rushes in through the nozzle, carrying dust and dirt with it.

The Full Story

An electric motor spins a fan that pushes air out of the vacuumโ€™s exhaust, lowering the pressure inside. Air from the room, at normal atmospheric pressure, rushes through the nozzle to fill the gap, sweeping dirt with it. Bagged vacuums trap debris in a porous bag that lets air through, while bagless cyclonic models, popularised by James Dyson, spin air at high speed so dust is flung out into a bin. Filters, including HEPA filters, catch fine particles before the air is released. Rotating brush bars loosen dirt from carpets so the airflow can collect it.

Key Facts

1.Hubert Cecil Booth patented a powered vacuum cleaner in 1901.
2.Dyson reportedly built over 5,000 prototypes of his cyclone vacuum.
3.HEPA filters capture at least 99.97 percent of particles 0.3 microns in size.
