How do scientists explain Neptune’s unusually strong winds?
Solar SystemNeptune
Quick Answer
Heat escaping from Neptune’s interior helps drive powerful storms and winds. Some winds on Neptune can reach more than 2,000 km/h.
The Full Story
Neptune is far from the Sun, so sunlight alone cannot explain the energy in its atmosphere. Like Jupiter, it emits more internal heat than it receives, and that heat helps power atmospheric motion. Combined with rapid rotation and different temperatures at various latitudes, this produces some of the fastest winds known on any planet. Voyager 2’s 1989 flyby helped reveal Neptune’s dynamic weather, including large storms and dark spots.
Key Facts
1.Neptune’s winds can exceed 2,000 km/h
2.It emits more internal heat than it gets from sunlight
3.Voyager 2 observed large storms in 1989
